Heavily armed and mostly masked Israeli soldiers gave Al Jazeera journalists 10 minutes to leave their Ramallah office and tore down banners honoring Shireen Abu Akleh, the Palestinian-American journalist whom Israel assassinated in 2022, before welding shut the office's doors.

As I recall, the legislation which has permitted Israel to ban Al Jazeera from operating in Israel since May referred to media operations "in Israel", which seemed to explain why Al Jazeera has until now continued to operate in the occupied West Bank, which (aside from expanded East Jerusalem) has not yet been formally annexed by Israel.

As Israel ramps up its assaults against the people of the West Bank, which have killed more than 700 Palestinians since October, and as it may well be planning to intensify these assaults still further, that annoying legal technicality appears, in practice, to have been overcome.
